We are unique - we are 150 years old and you're a part of it!

The Opening Ceremonies of the 150th Anniversary began with the May Crowning and Junior and Senior Children's choirs singing "Bring Flowers of the Fairest."  Incidentally, the members voted that song in as one of the top 10 most memorable songs.  To see photos of the day's festivities, please click into our "New Millennium" page:
http://www.stmarysdramaguild.org/alumni2000.htm

HOMECOMING ITINERARY:
3:00pm: Coffee, Tea & Pastry reception:
Plan to come early for check-in at the main door (47th avenue entrance between 70th and 71st street), to sign the registry and to get your name/class tag.  Begin your journey back in time in the main auditorium.  Guided tours of the school and grounds will be conducted at this time.  Come early to start your tour and see the library, your old classrooms, the gym, the etc…  The memorabilia room in the lower church will be open for viewing as well, and the lower church is also the last stop on the guided tour.  The St. Mary's School students and CCD students have put an art-show together themed "The Blessed Mother".  The children's artwork will be on display during this time.  You will have a chance to meet some of the young artists as many of the art show participants are children and grand children of SMS graduates and will be attending the homecoming.  There will also be a table where you can reserve space in the 150th Anniversary journal.  Live entertainment.

5:00pm: Mass in celebration of the homecoming:
Rev. Kenneth Boller, class of 1960 will be the principal celebrant.  Alumni participation has been planned for the liturgy and special offertory gifts have been selected and petitions written, reflective of our special celebration.

6:00pm: Cocktail party with light refreshments and live entertainment
After mass we will retire to the cafeteria located on the lower level of the new school.  The memorabilia room in the lower church will be re-opened for viewing after mass concludes.  Tours of the school should continue for a portion of the evening.  Since our day will begin early, there will be light refreshments served at the cocktail party.  Along with fruits and cheeses we will have more substantial snacks (salads and cold cuts, etc…) available for you as well as beer, wine and sodas.  A diverse array of entertainment will be provided by school and CCD graduates from the 1960's through the 1980's along with the Junior and Senior Children's Choirs, a small floorshow put together by the Principal Mary Basile and current St. Mary's students and the Contemporary Ensemble/folk group.  Tickets are not required.

SPRING CLEANING..
While you are doing your spring-cleaning keep us in mind!  If you have any of the following items gathering dust around the house & don't want them any more, we would be more than happy to take them off your hands!  Bring items any school day  or call the office 718-639-8042 to find out when & where to drop off your items.  We REALLY hope to hear from you soon!   As always, thank you for your continued support.

1) If you are getting rid of any children's VHS movies or cartoons for the after school video library.   A BIG thank you to Dorothy B. '67 who dropped off some great titles; the kids are really enjoying them! (Especially the Jim Carey!)

2) If you have any old electronic musical keyboards (Casio type) just lying around, why not let us make MUSICAL MAGIC with it!  We can turn your old keyboard into a big smile (on a child's face that is!)

3) We are also gathering items to enhance our summer science program.  To view the listing of desired supplies, please see the bottom of this page:

Please come to St. Mary's for the Rosary, May Crowning and Mass on Mother's Day, May 9th.  For several weeks now we have been signing the names of our own mothers and grandmothers in a special journal in the church.  Please come early enough so you may have time to write the names of your mother in the 150th anniversary Mother's day registry too.

1)  THE MAY CROWNING AND ROSARY KICK IT OFF:  Plan to arrive about 11:30 for a decade of the rosary followed by the May Crowning of our Mother, Mary Help of Christians.  The St. Mary's Youth choir (3rd grade and up) along with the St. Mary's Junior Choir (PreK through 2nd grade) to sing for the crowning of the Blessed Mother, joined by flautists from the St. Mary's.  After the May crowning we will continue our celebration with 12:30 MASS.

2) THE MOTHER'S DAY LITURGY: Principal celebrant Bishop Thomas V. Daly will concelebrate the 12:30 pm mass with the many priests who were at St. Mary's at one time or another during our rich history.

Not only has St. Mary's created some highly intelligent individuals, but oh so talented too!  Alumni from the SMS and Confraternity/CCD classes of 1978, 1984, 1986 and 1981, will provide some of the entertainment at the homecoming.  Thanks to Garry, Ki-Young & Fabio.  If you would like to participate in some way please send a note to alumni@stmarysdramaguild.org and we will point you in the right direction.

"MASS" MAILING (no pun intended...)
A big thank-you to the cadets of St. Mary's girl scouts for their incredible help last Friday evening getting the alumni mailing stuffed, labeled and done!  In speaking with the kids last night, it's my pleasure to tell you they are very excited about homecoming day!  If you graduated in 1979 or 1954, your must remember the excitement of the celebration.  The class of 2004 is particularly honored to be graduating on the 150th anniversary.

==================

HEARTWARMING GENEROSITY:
We would like to stress there is no charge for the homecoming, but we have been overwhelmed with questions about donations for the celebration and school programs.

Many of you have said you prefer to make your donation in person on homecoming day, but of course if you are one of the many who want us to have it in advance to help pay for the celebration it can be mailed to the rectory.

Just this week two ladies from the class of 1955 dropped by for a weekday mass and popped in to the rectory with their homecoming donation.  If you want to mail or drop off a donation in advance of the celebration, please mark the envelope as follows so there is no confusion:

St. Mary's Alumni Association
Attn: Homecoming / V Holley
70-31 48th Avenue
Woodside, NY  11377

We want to reiterate there is no charge for the party, but the incredible generosity of St. Mary's alumni is truly heartwarming.

(Need we say more...)  Family matriarch, Eleanore Calamari has fallen ill as of late and has "one foot in heaven" as her niece Ann has so eloquently put it.  Eleanore's daughter requested that we let our members know they can send a prayer and/or get well card to Eleanore while she is still with us.  For further information, please reply to this email.

We would also wish Patty D. '66 a speedy recovery from some rather serious injuries sustained in a car accident  recently.  Our prayers will accompany you on your road to recovery.

HOLY HUMOR:
Little Johnny had been having a hard time with his math as of late.  His mom and dad had done almost everything to help their son, but nothing worked. Finally, they took their savings and enrolled him into a very small Catholic school hoping this would finally give their son what he needed to excel in math.

At the end of the first day of school little Johnny walked in with a stern expression on his face, and walked right past the parents and went straight to his room and quietly closed the door. For nearly two hours he toiled away in his room with math books strewn about his desk and the surrounding floor. He only emerged long enough to eat, and after quickly cleaning his plate, he went straight back to his room, closed the door, and worked feverishly at his studies until bedtime.

Overjoyed, the parent's went into their son's room, thrilled at his enthusiasm.

"Was it the nuns that did it?", the father asked. The boy only shook his head and said, "No."

"Was it the one-on-one tutoring? The peer-mentoring?", asked the mother. Again, the boy shrugged, "No."

"The textbooks? The teacher? The curriculum?", asked the father. "Nope," said the son.

"When I walked into the lobby, and I saw that guy nailed to the plus sign, I knew they meant business!"

=============================

TIME PASSAGES...
We are so happy to have been put in contact with Cecelia Scotland - Omara, alumnus of the Class of 1925. Cecelia graduated 79 years ago and Mrs. Omara is, to our knowledge, the eldest of our honored alumni.
We were thrilled to have received the following email from her neighbor Joanne M. class of 1960:

"I was sure you would be pleased to hear about Ceil (as she is called). I see her all the time. She lives 2 houses away from me... Im sure she will be happy to talk about her school years! I plan to bring her to the festivities...Will let you know Take care, Joanne"

In addition, Mary Bennetti from the class of 1928 has also contacted us. Alma Mater St. Mary, your children are coming-home to you! If you have a friend or relative who graduated during that era, would you please let us know? That generation tends not to have Internet access, and therefore has probably not been receiving our e-newsletters. We would love you hear from you, about them.

SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE WAS A HUGE SUCCESS... NEXT ONE IN JUNE!
Open house big success. Great to see so many alumni with their children. Many of our graduates who have moved away are dropping their children off with Grandma and Grandpa on the way to work. These school-age children are continuing the tradition now enrolling in St. Mary's for the September term. We're sure that Grandma and Grandpa are thrilled too!

Even the 8th grade boys have stayed until 6 and 7pm making huge banners and cutting and pasting letters. It would really make you proud to see the boys working so hard to keep St. Mary's going strong. They love their school just we do! Come June they will be the newest addition to the Alumni Association. Very nice.

Call the school for registration information, you don't have to wait until June!

HOLY-HUMOR...

A father wanted to read a magazine but was being bothered by his little girl, Shannon. Finally, he tore a sheet out of his magazine on which was printed the map of the world.

Tearing it into small pieces, he gave it to Shannon, and said, "Go into the other room and see if you can put this together."

After a few minutes, Shannon returned and handed him the map correctly fitted together. The father was surprised and asked how she had finished so quickly.

"Oh," she said, "on the other side of the paper is a picture of Jesus. When I got all of Jesus back where He belonged, then the world came together."

ALUMNI IN NEED OF YOUR PRAYERS:

MARY JANE CURRY '55:
"Just made a phone call to find out how my classmate, Mary Jane Curry, was doing. Sadly, she passed away on Sunday. I had known she was ill with bone cancer, and thought she'd have lasted longer. I only found her about 3 weeks ago, but was lucky to have had a 20 minute chat with her. I sent her a copy of the graduation picture, and had put her in touch with another classmate who lived on her block as kids. She left her 87 year old mom and 2 siblings."
-Mary K. '55

CELEBRATE THE MOMENTS OF YOUR LIFE...
1928   Anton            Posavetz
1929   Marie            McCauley-Coster
1930   Peter            Calamari
At 90 years of age, Mr. Posavetz is, to our knowledge, the eldest of our honored alumni.  We are thrilled to have received the following email from his granddaughter, Mary:
Dear (Alumni Association),
I just wanted to let you know that my grandfather has been working on a story of remembrances from his elementary school days at St. Mary's.  I will send it to you when he is done.
Yours,
Mary
If you have a friend or relative who graduated during that era, would you please let us know?  That generation tends not to have Internet access, and therefore has probably not been receiving our e-newsletters.  We would love you hear from you, about them.
=============
HOMECOMING LITURGY: Do you know of any alumni who have answered God's call?  Fr. Kenneth Boller, class of 1960, will be celebrating the alumni 5:00 mass.  As we begin to plan this homecoming liturgy, we are actively gathering a contact listing for alumni in ministry and service to the Lord such as priests, brothers, sisters, deacons, etc. to participate.  If you can help us please send an email to: alumni@stmarysdramaguild.org
=============
NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK: The following classes need a "class rep" to take charge of locating missing classmates, many records are incomplete and obsolete and/or missing, and some alumni are not represented at all:

LOOK FOR THE RE-UNION LABEL: The class of 1947 is planning a reunion along with the classes of 55, 56, 80, 84 & 86 and the cadets.  Specific information is listed below:

Graduation year 1947 needs help locating its' members.  If you know of anyone who graduated from St. Mary's during this time period, please urge him or her to contact us.  It is VERY difficult to find people from almost 60 years ago - ESPECIALLY the girls because they take married names.

Blue Angels / Cadets reunion posted.  Organizer Susan O'Neil.  Please respond if interested.  If enough of you respond Susan will proceed with organizing the event.  You can join the Cadets chat at this website:
http://stmarys.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1078070391

If you want to plan a reunion, or if you are already planning a reunion for your class, please let us know so we can post the information accordingly. For further information or to contact your class-reps and/or classmates, just drop us an email and we will forward it to the appropriate parties.  Send your submissions and inquiries to:  alumni@stmarysdramaguild.org.  See the reunion pages here: http://www.stmarysdramaguild.org/alumnireunions.htm

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE... THE PEACE CORPS THAT IS... Former St. Mary's student, Crissie Ferrara, joined the Peace Corps to work as a missionary teacher helping the poor and less fortunate of the world.  Recently she returned from her South American school house (where they don't even have running water) to speak their pen pals, our own St. Mary's 7th graders.  Crissie's family history with St. Mary's is extensive and dates back to her grandfather, Eugene Calamari Sr., an alumnus of the class of 1928!  If interested in sending Miss Ferrara desperately needed school supplies, reply to : alumni@stmarysdramaguild.org
